A 23-YEAR-old athlete from Capiz captured a bronze medal in pencak silat in the ongoing 2018 Asian Games at the Padepokan Pencak Silat TM III Hall last Aug. 26.
Dines Dumaan, a native of Panit-an, Capiz, delivered the Philippine’s ninth bronze medal in the quadrennial games.
Dumaan, a former student of Hercor College of Roxas City, settled for the bronze after losing the 55kg men’s single tournament against Muhammad Faizul M Nasir of Malaysia in the semifinals.
Dumaan scored 14-9-8-11-15 in three rounds of sparring, while Nasir scored of 17-16-13-14 and 18.
To recall, Dumaan also won a gold medal in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia, ending the country’s 12-year gold medal drought in the tournament. He received a P350,000 cash incentive from the Philippine government.
Dumaan, who is also a farmer before, gave the money to his parents to buy the land they have been farming for almost a decade now.
Meanwhile, Dumaan’s teammate Jefferson Rhay Loon also lost his semifinals match against Ngoc Toan Nguyen of Vietnam in the 60-65kgs. category.
Loon lost on all scores of the five juries, 8-12-12-6-10, compared to Nguyen with posted 22-26-20-17-21.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, the Philippines ranked 16th in the overall Asiad medal tally with three golds and 11 bronze medals.
