Rolly (Goni) strengthened from a typhoon into a super typhoon at 2 am on Sunday, November 1, shortly before its expected landfall in the province of Catanduanes.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) did not yet specify Rolly's current maximum sustained winds, but a super typhoon has winds exceeding 220 kilometers per hour (km/h).
PAGASA said Signal No. 5 – the highest tropical cyclone wind signal – will be raised in Catanduanes, the eastern part of Camarines Sur, and Albay.
"Catastrophic wind damage is expected," the state weather bureau warned.
Even before PAGASA upgraded Rolly to super typhoon status, it was already considered the world's strongest tropical cyclone for 2020 so far.
