Filipina volleyball star Majoy Baron received offer to play as import in Taiwan

Filipino athletes continue to turn heads of scouts abroad.

Majoy Baron, who is billed as one of the country's brightest volleyball stars, received an offer to play as import for Top Speed in a top-tier league in Taiwan.

Her manager, Suki Salvador, confirmed the news to GMA News Online and bared that they had accepted the offer but it didn't pan due to the pandemic.

"Yes, Majoy has received an offer to play in Taiwan for Top Speed. However, the conference she was invited to was postponed due to rising COVID-19 cases in Taiwan. The tournament has yet to be rescheduled," Salvador said in an interview.

Salvador added that they have secured the blessing of Baron's mother club, F2 Logistics, as well as the national team before agreeing to play for Top Speed.

"We accepted the offer after getting the nod of F2 Logistics and PNVF, however, just when we were about to begin the processing of her papers, the country went into lockdown," he added.

Baron is a key cog for the Cargo Movers after having helped the squad win a number of titles in the Philippine Superliga including the 2016 and 2019 All-Filipino Conference.

After F2 Logistics decided to jump ship to Premier Volleyball League (PVL) early this year, Baron remained to be the team's main scorer while also being the top middle blocker of the national team.

And Salvador assured that if ever another opportunity to play overseas presents itself, they will still grab it.

"Once the tournament is rescheduled and we do get another offer, we will have to look at her commitments with the National Team first and her current club team before making a decision," Salvador, who also handles Baron's teammates Aby Maraño, Kim Dy, and Kim Fajardo, said.

"It was sad that it didn’t push through, but Top Speed was so sweet to send Majoy a token gift which she posted the other day."

Aside from Baron, Filipino talents like cagers Thirdy Ravena, brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño and volleyball aces Jaja Santiago, Bryan Bagunas, and Marck Espejo are also making waves in Japan.
