Filipino basketball legend Jimmy Alapag continues his journey through the NBA’s ranks, signing on as an assistant coach with the G League’s Stockton Kings, Sacramento’s affiliate, on Monday, August 23 (Tuesday, August 24, Manila time).
After a successful, title-winning second stint with Sacramento in the 2021 Summer League, the 43-year-old mentor will now serve as deputy to Stockton head coach Bobby Jackson, a 13-year NBA veteran point guard who played half his career in Sacramento.
Alapag will join fellow assistant Akachi Okugo on the bench, while former Sacramento and Los Angeles Lakers video coordinator Will Scott is named associate head coach behind Jackson.
Prior to his second stint with Sacramento’s Summer League team, the six-time PBA champion spent one season as an assistant with the San Miguel Beermen in 2019, and won two straight championships before failing to capture the ever-elusive Grand Slam.
Since 2017, he has also served as the head coach of San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), and won his first title in 2018 with a team led by the superstar trio of Justin Brownlee, Renaldo Balkman, and Ray Parks Jr.
Alapag has since settled in the United States with his family in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
