Barangay Ginebra clinched the number one seed heading into the quarterfinals, running over Terrafirma Dyip, 102-80, Monday at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena.
Scottie Thompson registered a near triple-double, coming up with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Japeth Aguilar led the scoring with 21 points alongside seven boards and two blocks while Aljon Mariano contributed 17 and 11.
The Gin Kings broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring their foe, 35-14, and led by as many as 24 points in the first half.
It wasn't a total domination for Ginebra as Terrafirma showed its resiliency after halftime. Reden Celda torched the net late in the third period to cut the deficit to just eight points. The Dyip tried their best for a comeback in the fourth but the Gin Kings had an answer for every run. Free throws from Mariano pushed Ginebra's lead back to 21 points, 99-78, with a little over two minutes remaining.
Ginebra finished the regular season with an 8-3 record as it waits for the smoke to clear in the tight quarterfinal race. Terrafirma dropped to a league-worst 1-9 but will have a chance to play spoiler against the playoff-seeking NLEX Road Warriors.
